How to Avoid Advertising in the 21st Century
69Technology and services provided in this century have brought both the good and the bad to consumers and marketers. While it is easier to get the word out there to the public, it also brings with it a greater amount of competition. Consumers around the world and especially in the United States love the availability of choices. Throughout the day they are given the opportunity to choose from everything, from different kinds of cereal at the grocery store to even what they listen to on the radio. It can almost seem overwhelming, the amount of choices available on the global consumer market. And to a business company it seems almost impossible to compete amongst all the choices.
Now days, the best way of advertising your company or product is to actually learn how to avoid advertising in the first place. It is still important to market your company or product, but that does not mean take the route of every other mainstream form of advertising. Television, radio, billboards, newspapers, and magazines are the classic and most common form of advertising.
To be ‘common’ in this day and age is not necessarily a good thing. Customers are looking for things that stand out against the crowd. How else are they going to be able to choose from the dozens if not hundreds of other similar products out there in the market?
Business and companies wishing to advertise their service and product need to think outside of the box and think how to avoid advertising. They can still market their product, but the idea is to steer away from the mundane and ‘common’ forms of advertising such as television and radio. The internet is a hot spot for marketing a new product or service. As people spend a large amount of their time online, it is the prime location to set up a marketing campaign.
There are certain websites they people tend to frequent most often such as their email account or social networks. These types of websites stay afloat and offer free services to their clients based on the advertising available. The internet offers ample amount of opportunity to get your product and service out there for the masses to see. However, you still might run into the problem of having to also compete against the masses of other similar products and services also advertised on the internet.
Nonetheless, it is difficult to figure out how to avoid advertising in order to stand out against the competition. Another way to look at the situation is to allow your product or service to become a more personal business. Instead of thinking of the big picture of marketing on television, radio, or internet, think of the small market. Word of mouth, friends, family, and your personal community can be an excellent way to ‘market’ your product. While the world around might change, in terms of marketing, word of mouth is still the most powerful advertising tool. Companies can simply learn how to avoid advertising by taking their product to the street and letting the customers decide for themselves. If they like it, the word will spread, and if they don’t, then adjustments might have to be made. In the end, a good product or service should be able to market itself.
